La fame di terre e di grani e il rialzo dei prezzi agricoli durante le fasi di crescita demografica fra metà quattrocento e primo seicento spinsero i privati e gli stati a intensificare gli sforzi per redimere alla coltivazione gli spazi occupati da valli e paludi nella bassa padana. Furono decenni di grandi interventi in lavoro e denaro, che mostrano, fra l'altro, la complessità e la vastità degli interessi in gioco. Hunger for land and grain and rising agricultural prices during the phases of population growth between the mid-­fifteenth and early seventeenth centuries prompted private individuals and states to intensify efforts to redeem for cultivation the spaces occupied by valleys and marshes in the lower Po Valley.
