Notes for an Introduction to Warburg's Symbolismus als Umfangsbestimmung

Under the form of short commentary notes and interpretative notes, this article tries to put in perspective the passage – the leap (Sprung) – from the logic of the concept to the logic of the symbol, emblematically illustrated in Warburg's manuscript Symbolismus als Umfangsbestimmung (1896-1901) and intensely elaborated upon by twentieth-century philosophers, from Cassirer to Heidegger and Merleau Ponty. The dominant motif in the construction of symbolism is the distancing (Entfernung) of object and subject, now lost through incorporation, through assimilation – as in the case of the ornament and the usable – now found again through balancing and comparison – as in the case of figurative art and language. Warburg's figures of distancing are the grasping man (Greifmensch) and the man of metaphors (Denkmensch) and – between the two – the artist-man (Künstler). [Publisher's text]
