Includes bibliographical references.

Innovation is a fundamental engine of economic growth and holds promise as a potential solution to many of humanity's grand challenges, from food and water scarcity to energy consumption, from global warming to income inequality. Innovation is also a major driver of competitive advantage across fi rms, with more innovative companies often establishing themselves as market leaders. Today, many industries are indeed dominated by technology giants or highly innovative companies. In this book, we aim to address two main questions: What explains differences in innovation incentives across industries and fi rms? And how do intellectual property rights strategies affect the balance between value creation and value appropriation in innovation? We address these questions by building on a robust body of theoretical and empirical research that has established a rigorous framework for understanding current innovation dynamics.
