Symbolische Imagination

2024 - Bibliopolis

P. 99-116

The clarification of the human creativity when it comes to understanding and shaping the world runs like a common thread through Cassirer's philosophizing. Cassirer calls this creativity “symbolic imagination”. His philosophizing revolves around the question of in which way this essentially free imagination is inhibited and bound in the discovery and creation of the new. This paper illustrates Cassirer's thesis that the human liberty of shaping symbols and symbol worlds challenges the disciplining of the imagination and the reflection of the products of the imagination. Without the disciplining of the imagination and without the critical validation of the productively created, human self-liberation is not possible. The elucidation of this thesis includes the illustration of the Cassirerian method of making explicit principles of understanding and shaping reality and the role of the imagination in these processes.
